KC Cover Potholes

Scottish Conservative and Unionist candidate for Midlothian Keith Cockburn says new statistics revealing the number of potholes reported in Midlothian Council are "shocking".

A series of Freedom of Information Requests by the party have revealed that over 100,000 potholes were reported across Scotland in the space of just 10 months.

The figure is likely to be far higher as not all of Scotland's councils responded to the request.

Between April 2023 and February 2024, a total of 3350 pothole-related reports were made to Midlothian Council.

Keith Cockburn says the buck stops with the SNP Government for the dire state of the roads in Midlothian Council as their funding cuts mean councils don't have the resources to carry out the repairs required.

Keith Cockburn says that, coupled with the failures of the SNP to invest in the public transport network in Midlothian Council, means motorists are having to put themselves and their vehicles at risk on pothole-ridden roads.

Scottish Conservative and Unionist candidate for Midlothian said: "These shocking figures highlight the growing pothole epidemic on Midlothian Council’s roads on the SNP's watch.

"It is astonishing that so many reports in relation to potholes have been received in less than a year and the buck stops with the SNP Government for the dire state of the roads in Midlothian.

"Their savage and sustained cuts mean Midlothian Council simply doesn't have the resources to repair our pothole-scarred roads.

"Coupled with a failure to invest in the public transport network in Midlothian, it means motorists are having to put themselves and their vehicles at risk on sub-standard roads.

"The state of the roads is a key general election issue for people in Midlothian.

"If voters back the Scottish Conservatives on July 4th, we can ensure the focus is on people's priorities like fixing the roads, rather than the SNP's independence obsession."

In an act of cowardice, Keir Starmer has put Party before country. He cannot make the tough decisions necessary.
